Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian arched overmantel mirror, traditionally referred to as a chimney glass, is designed to sit directly above a fireplace mantlepiece. Characterised by rounded upper shoulders, clean moulding profiles, and a gilded wood and gesso structure, these mirrors reflect light across living spaces and enhance architectural proportions.

Nineteenth-century gilt mirrors feature frames crafted from pine or hardwood cores coated in gessoa smooth mixture of chalk and binder. Gold leaf is applied over this base using water or oil gilding techniques, enclosing a hand-cut silvered glass plate backed with timber boards.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural signs of age, such as subtle oxidation or foxing on the glass, areas of wear showing red or grey clay bolus beneath the gold leaf, and hand-sawn softwood backboards securing the frame.

Positioning a large gilt mirror above a clean-lined fireplace mantlepiece or leaning it against a neutral accent wall creates visual depth. The warm metallic tones bridge classic period architectural details with contemporary soft furnishings and muted wall palettes.

Gilt wood and gesso frames should be dusted gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster, avoiding moisture or harsh chemical sprays which dissolve gesso and remove delicate gold leafing. Clean the glass plate separately using a barely damp microfibre cloth.
