Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror, traditionally known as a chimney glass, is a broad decorative mirror designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these mirrors served to reflect candlelight and hearth fires, expanding the perceived scale and light within formal living spaces.

19th-century giltwood mirrors feature a carved timber structure coated with gesso, a smooth plaster mixture of chalk and animal glue binder. Moulded ornamental details were applied before fine gold leaf was carefully layered over the gesso using traditional water or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic antique giltwood mirrors typically exhibit fine age cracking across the gesso surface, particularly where structural timber joints meet underneath. The reverse usually displays hand-sawn wooden backing boards, aged iron tacks, and light oxidisation or dark foxing spots on the glass mirror plate.

A Victorian overmantel mirror works effectively as an architectural focal point mounted above a fireplace surround in both traditional and contemporary settings. Alternatively, it can be styled resting atop a grand dining room sideboard or positioned in a hallway to reflect light and highlight room proportions.

Maintain antique giltwood frames by dusting gently with a soft, dry feather duster or camel-hair brush. Avoid using liquid cleansers, damp cloths, or commercial polishes, as moisture can dissolve historic water gilding and loosen delicate gesso ornaments.
