This nineteenth-century French Rococo pier mirror displays an ornate giltwood frame finished in gold, complete with an arched mirror top and a heavily decorated carved cresting. The surrounding woodwork includes elaborate scrollwork and intricate foliage motifs stretching down the vertical sides and along the base moulding. The original mirror plate is set within the deep wooden structure, showing gentle signs of age across its reflective surface alongside a warm metallic sheen on the carved gilding. Measuring 161 cm high, 90 cm wide and 17 cm deep, this vertical wall hanging piece commands a notable presence. In a contemporary home, such an antique mirror finds an ideal placement positioned above a sideboard in a dining room or living space, reflecting light and adding traditional character to an interior. The French chateau style integrates seamlessly with period property aesthetics or serves as a striking focal point against a plain wall in a more eclectic setting.

FAQs

A pier mirror is a tall, narrow wall mirror designed historically to fill the masonry space between two windows, known as a pier, to maximize light reflection in a room.

Antique giltwood frames are typically constructed from carved timber coated with gesso plaster, which is then layered with gold leaf applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic period giltwood frames show hand-carved wood jointing on the reverse, natural surface wear revealing the underlying reddish clay bole beneath the gilding, and minor age-related distortion or foxing in the mirror glass.

A pier mirror can be positioned above a dining room sideboard, placed above a hallway console table, or mounted between tall windows to enhance focal points and bounce light through living spaces.

Maintain giltwood surfaces by dusting gently with a soft microfibre brush; water and chemical solvents must be avoided as they dissolve water-gilded finishes and damage delicate gesso work.
