FAQs

19th-century French oak wall mirrors frequently display elaborate wood carvings, including C-scrolls, acanthus foliage, and crest pediments typical of the Henri II and French Provincial revivals. Frames are constructed from solid native European oak, framing bevelled glass plates.

These mirrors were constructed using hand-carved solid oak timbers secured with traditional mortise and tenon joinery. The reflective elements typically comprised thick plate glass with hand-cut bevelled edges and silvered backings.

Authentic pieces exhibit visible hand-carving marks on the cresting and frame, natural dark oxidation in the deep relief sections, and original timber backboards. The mirror glass may also show subtle desilveration or foxing consistent with period age.

A carved oak mirror can be positioned above a fireplace mantel, hung over a hallway console table, or installed in a traditional bathroom setting to introduce textural depth and architectural interest.

Dust the carved oak frame regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush, applying natural beeswax polish occasionally to preserve the timber patina. Clean the glass with a lint-free cloth, keeping liquid cleaners away from the wood perimeter.
