This French Renaissance Revival wall mirror dates to 1890 and brings a French Chateau design vibe to domestic spaces. Fashioned from rich dark brown oak with a bevelled glass plate, the frame displays intricate hand-carved openwork grape and vine leaf details, acanthus leaves, and a detachable pierced cresting carved with birds amongst stylised foliage. Measuring 130 cm high, 81 cm wide, and 8 cm deep, the piece requires wall hanging above a mantel in a living room, dining room, or hallway. The frame demonstrates a warm, aged patina and displays visible wood grain alongside the dimensional relief of the fruit and leaf motifs. The rectangular mirror plate reflects interior surroundings with soft age-related speckling, while the heavy wooden construction provides structural substance. Suitable for domestic display, this decorative wall mirror integrates easily into period or transitional interior schemes as a focal point.

FAQs

Mirrors from this era frequently feature intricate hand-carved botanical motifs, such as grapevines and acanthus leaves, reflecting Renaissance Revival and rustic regional craftsmanship.

Solid French oak was favoured for the frame due to its durability and prominent grain structure, while the mirror plate was made from mercury-backed or silvered glass with hand-bevelled edges.

Look for deep, hand-chiselled carving details, natural grain oxidisation, original wood panel backing, and light desilverisation or spotting along the edges of the reflective glass plate.

Position the mirror above a minimalist console table or fireplace mantelpiece to create a striking textural contrast between traditional craftsmanship and modern clean lines.

Dust the wooden frame regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically along the grain, ensuring glass cleaner is applied lightly to the mirror without touching the wood.
