How common are oak mirrors on Sellingantiques?

Around 64 come up in a year, and 133 different dealers have offered one. That spread tells you it's a category almost every general dealer touches rather than a specialist field. The archive runs to 617 listings, dated between 1800 and 1930.

What shapes do oak mirror frames come in?

Rectangular frames dominate, with oval the most-named alternative at 37 titles. Octagonal, circular and cushion shapes follow behind. Cushion means a plump, outward-swelling moulding. Convex plates, domed rather than flat, are unusual in this category at 14 titles.

Are French oak mirrors part of this category?

Yes. 'French' appears in 62 titles, roughly a tenth of the archive, and includes Breton, Henri II, Louis XV revival, trumeau and chateau frames. Beyond France, foreign origins are thin. A single Swedish and a single Dutch mirror turn up across the whole sample.

Which carved subjects turn up on the frames?

Green Men are a recurring note, along with lions and griffins in pediments. An eagle, a bull, a dragon, a stag's head and an ouroboros snake all appear in the archive. Foliate scrollwork and egg-and-dart mouldings run alongside the figural carving, often on Gothic and Jacobean revival frames.

Do oak mirrors come as pairs or sets?

They do. Twenty-eight titles say 'pair', and the archive has produced a set of four and a set of six oak wall mirrors. Multiples generally sit above single glasses of comparable size and carving.

What are shop and outfitters mirrors?

Tall trade mirrors made for drapers and tailors. 'Shop' appears in ten titles, with 'outfitters' recurring beside it. They form a small but persistent thread through the category, usually full-height pieces.
