This Edwardian wall mirror dates to around 1900 and belongs to the gentleman's library style. The circular oak frame exhibits a deep profile, a dark brown timber colour, a carved inner carved element, a beaded rim moulding, and an original convex glass plate. A brass hanging ring is attached to the top of the frame for wall mounting. The piece shows original surfaces and condition throughout, complete with an antique reflective surface. Measuring 50 cm in height by 50 cm in width with a depth of 7 cm, the mirror provides substantial presence while maintaining a compact footprint on a wall. It is suitable for domestic placement above the mantel in a living room, hallway, or study.

Convex mirrors grew in popularity during the Georgian and Regency eras and remained sought-after decorative accessories into the Edwardian period. The curved glass distorts reflections to capture an entire room, historically earning them nicknames like sorcerers mirrors or butlers mirrors when used in dining rooms to discrete monitoring of service.

Edwardian frames were commonly constructed from native hardwoods such as dark stained oak or mahogany, often featuring carved moulding or beaded edge details. The mirror plates were made from silvered or mercurial curved glass fitted into a solid timber backing.

Authentic pieces feature natural wear on the wooden backing, hand-carved edge details, and slight silvering foxing or darkening along the edges of the curved glass. The weight of solid oak construction and antique brass hanging fixings also assist in verifying period origin.

Position a convex mirror above a mantelpiece, hallway console table, or within a gallery wall arrangement. Its curved surface catches ambient light and creates a wide-angle vignette of the surrounding room, making small spaces feel larger.

Dust the timber frame regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish occasionally along the grain. Avoid spraying glass cleaners directly onto the mirror plate, as moisture can seep behind the frame and damage the aged silvering layer.
