This Victorian wall mirror dates from the late 19th century around 1890 in the French Chateau style. The piece consists of an oval glass mirror plate enclosed within a broad moulded wooden frame with a gilded finish. The original gilding displays noticeable wear and rubbing in places that reveals the red ground beneath, alongside minor retouching. Details visible include a beaded sight edge and an ornamental cresting at the top featuring a central shield cartouche framed by gesso work floral swags. The mirror measures 91.5 cm high, 68.5 cm wide, and 7.5 cm deep overall. Positioned in a contemporary interior, this wall mirror suits placement above a drawing room mantelpiece or in an entrance hallway. The warm gold colour of the gilded frame and the classical motifs complement both traditional and eclectic living spaces. Hanging hardware permits secure mounting to a vertical surface as a decorative accent and functional looking glass.

Late Victorian oval gilt mirrors typically feature moulded plaster or carved wood frames coated in gold leaf. Design elements from this period often incorporated Neoclassical and Louis XVI revival influences, such as floral swags, ribbon crests, and beaded sight edges.

These mirrors were constructed using timber backings and frames overlaid with composition ornament (compo) to create detailed relief patterns. Gold leaf was applied over a bole clay base, while the mirror plate consisted of silvered glass.

Authentic period examples often display age-related wear to the gilding, revealing the red or grey bole clay underneath. The reverse side typically shows dark aged timber backboards, square-cut nails, and natural oxidisation on the original glass plate.

An antique gilt mirror can be positioned above a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard to serve as a focal point. The metallic finish complements both contemporary neutral paint palettes and deep period wall colours.

Giltwood frames should be dusted gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid flaking the delicate gold leaf. Liquid cleaners and damp cloths must be avoided on water-gilded surfaces, as moisture dissolves the underlying gesso.
