This oval margin mirror follows the Grand Regency style and dates from 1930. The piece is constructed from giltwood, gesso, and glass, presenting a bright gold finish across the entire frame. The structure incorporates an outer frame with a gadrooned rim, a thumb-moulded frieze, and a beaded inner moulding. Eight bevel-edged glass surround panels are segmented with flower heads, framing the large central mirror plate within. The frame measures 112 cm high, 83 cm wide, and 5 cm deep, and the design allows for hanging in either portrait or landscape orientation. In a contemporary home, this mirror suits placement above a mantelpiece in a living room, dining area, or hallway to add reflective light and a formal decorative touch to the wall space. The reflective marginal borders create layered depth, while the carved motifs and gadrooned edge complement traditional interior schemes. The item is in very good condition throughout, with clean glass surfaces and intact gilded mouldings ready for domestic installation.

A margin mirror, also known as a marginal or cushion mirror, consists of a primary central mirror plate framed by secondary border sections of mirror glass. Originating in seventeenth-century Northern Europe and widely produced throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, this design creates visual depth and reflects light from multiple angles.

Traditional margin mirrors feature wooden frames layered with gesso, applied water-gilding or oil-gilding using gold leaf, and bevelled silvered glass plates. The individual glass sections are held together by internal metal or gilded wood dividing bars.

Authentic period pieces display evidence of handmade construction, such as hand-cut bevels with subtle irregularities, original backboards made of pine or oak, and natural surface wear or oxidisation to the gilt finish and mirror silvering.

An oval margin mirror functions as a focal point when placed centrally above a fireplace mantelpiece, a hallway console table, or a dining room sideboard. The warm gold tones pair effectively with neutral wall paint, dark wainscoting, or contemporary minimalism.

Dust the frame regularly using a dry, soft camel-hair brush to prevent damage to delicate gold leaf. Clean the bevelled glass panels using a lightly dampened microfibre cloth, taking care to avoid getting moisture behind the glass edges or onto the gesso moulding.
