Beau Nash Bath has dated this Italian Florentine Gilt Mirror to the 19th Century.
The frame boasts an intricately pierced, openwork border overflowing with deeply undercut, sweeping acanthus leaves and C-scrolls that wrap closely around the central plate. It is crowned and anchored at the cardinal points by beautifully defined, stylized scallop shell crestings—a classic rocaille motif that lends a fluid, organic movement to the entire piece. The frame is finished in a rich, warm gilt patina, displaying a lovely depth where decades of gentle dusting have allowed the darker under-layers to subtly show through, highlighting the dramatic high-relief carving (circa 1860–1880) Italian Florentine, crafted in the flamboyant French Rococo taste. This fusion of Italian pierced-carving craftsmanship and French-inspired Louis XV asymmetry was highly prized by grand tour travellers and Victorian decorators alike.
