This 19th-century French Rococo Revival wall mirror exhibits a cartouche form in gilded wood with a glass plate. The ornate gold frame showcases deep carving comprising acanthus leaf scrolls, floral carvings, and C-scrolls, complemented by aged wear including surface scratches across the mirrored glass and minor losses to the gilded finish. Measuring 85 cm high, 64 cm wide, and 3 cm deep, the piece mounts easily to vertical surfaces. Position this decorative accent above a mantel in a living room, above a console table in an entryway, or over a vanity in a bedroom to bring traditional French Chateau style into a modern interior.

A French cartouche mirror features a sculpted frame shaped like an oval or shield with scrolled edges, prominent in 18th and 19th-century French design.

These mirrors were carved from timber, coated in gesso, and finished using water or oil gilding with thin sheets of gold leaf over clay bole.

Authentic pieces show natural wear to the gilding revealing the underlying gesso or clay bole, hand-carved joinery on the wooden backboard, and age-related oxidisation on the mirror glass.

Position the mirror above a mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard to create a focal point that reflects light and provides contrast against contemporary painted walls.

Dust the gilded frame gently with a dry, soft hair brush, avoiding water, chemical solvents, or damp cloths that dissolve water-soluble gesso.
