This Chippendale style wall mirror dates to 1880 and adopts a revival design within a giltwood frame finished in gold. The piece centres on a vertical oval mirror glass enclosed by layered mouldings, flanked by openwork lattice fretwork sides, and decorated with carved acanthus leaf cresting, C-scrolls, and a matching foliate apron. Measuring 97 cm high and 54 cm wide, the mirror functions practically as a wall-mounted glass accessory in a home interior. It fits well in a hallway, above a mantel, or inside a formal reception room, where it hangs flat against a vertical wall surface to reflect light and space.

Chippendale style giltwood mirrors typically incorporate Rococo, Gothic, and Chinese influences, characterised by asymmetric C-scrolls, floral motifs, acanthus leaves, and openwork fretwork.

Authentic eighteenth-century and revival pieces were carved from softwoods such as pine or lime, coated with gesso, and finished with thin layers of gold leaf applied using water gilding techniques.

Authentic pieces display hand-carved joinery on the reverse, signs of genuine gesso layers under worn gold leaf, and natural oxidisation on the original glass plate.

Position the mirror above a contemporary console table or fireplace mantelpiece to create an elegant focal point that contrasts ornate carved detail with modern, clean lines.

Dust delicate carved giltwood gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding water, liquid cleaners, or damp cloths which can dissolve water-based gesso and damage the gold leaf.
