A 19th-century Florentine wall mirror in a gilded wooden frame. The piece stands 90 cm high, 80 cm wide, and 12 cm deep, presenting a rectangular silhouette suited for mounting above a mantel in a living room or hallway. The construction incorporates giltwood, glass, and gesso materials finished in gold. Openwork carved acanthus scrollwork decorates the outer frame, accompanied by beaded inner mouldings and recessed mirrored side inserts surrounding the bevelled central glass plate. The item displays four smaller bevelled plates set at angles to the main glass, alongside detailed wooden relief carving across the borders and a reflective gold surface. Use this wall mirror to add traditional style and extra light to an interior space.

FAQs

Florentine mirrors originated in Florence, Italy, during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, recognised for their hand-carved foliage, openwork scrollwork, and gold leaf gilding.

Traditional construction involves carved wood, often softened with layers of gesso plaster, coated in red bole, and finished with applied gold leaf alongside mirrored glass panels.

Look for carved wood joints on the reverse, signs of water gilding where the underlying reddish clay shows through light wear, and age-consistent oxidisation on the mirror glass.

Mount the mirror above a clean-lined console table or mantelpiece to contrast ornate metallic carving against contemporary neutral walls and simple architectural lines.

Dust the detailed carving gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush or feather duster, avoiding moisture or chemical cleaners which dissolve delicate gesso and leaf finishes.
