This Edwardian wall mirror from 1900 exemplifies the Grand Regency style with its distinct oval frame. The piece incorporates giltwood, glass, and composition materials finished in a rich gold colour. The ornate wooden frame displays classic egg-and-dart moulding alongside a detailed beaded trim, while retaining its original bevelled glass plate. Visible details include a smooth metallic sheen across the moulded gesso decoration and minor signs of age to the reflective surface. Measuring 89 cm by 64 cm, the mirror provides a practical scale for domestic interiors. Placed above the mantel in a living room, dining room, or hallway, the fixture reflects natural light while adding a decorative focal point to the interior space. The wall mirror works well in traditional reception rooms or bedrooms, complementing antique furnishings and classic architectural details throughout the home.

Oval gilt mirrors gained immense popularity during the Georgian and Regency periods in England, serving as decorative focal points and functional light-reflecting accents. The gilding technique involved applying gold leaf onto carved wood or moulded composition frames to simulate solid precious metal.

Traditional construction incorporates a softwood or hardwood core, built up with gesso and moulded plaster or composition detailing, finished with water or oil gilding using thin gold leaf. The reflective surface consists of mercury-backed or silvered plate glass.

Authentic period gilt mirrors often feature hand-cut wooden backs, natural micro-cracking across the gesso layer known as craquelure, and subtle wear revealing the underlying reddish bole clay layer. The mirror glass may also exhibit slight oxidisation or dark spotting near the edges.

Positioning the mirror above a mantelpiece or contemporary sideboard creates visual contrast between historical texture and clean modern lines. Hanging it opposite a window maximises natural light and creates an illusion of expanded room dimensions.

Dust the gilded frame softly using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth without applying liquid cleaners or chemical polishes, as moisture damages thin gold leaf and water-soluble gesso. Clean the mirror glass carefully with a slightly dampened cloth, ensuring liquid does not seep into the frame edges.
