This pair of Regency miniature wall mirrors dates from 1800. Each piece has an oval giltwood frame finished with water-gilding in a bright gold tone, featuring beaded interior moulding, a gadrooned outer rim, original backing boards, and hanging wire attached to the reverse. The mercury-silvered mirror plates display a grey tone in their reflection along with fine surface scratches and foxing. Each mirror measures 25 cm high by 21 cm wide. These small decorative wall mirrors suit placement in a hallway, bedroom or narrow wall space in a traditional home interior. They hang vertically to add a reflective element and classic Regency style to compact areas.

FAQs

Regency giltwood oval mirrors from the early nineteenth century typically feature Neoclassical proportions, delicate water gilding, and refined perimeter mouldings such as beading, gadrooning, or ribbon-and-stave carving.

Frames were carved from softwoods like pine or lime, coated with layers of gesso clay bole, and finished with thin gold leaf applied using water-gilding or oil-gilding methods.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural age wear to the gold leaf, showing dark red or grey gesso bole beneath, along with subtle dark ox-blood foxing or distortion on hand-blown mercury glass plates.

Miniature mirrors are effectively styled when hung in symmetrical pairs on narrow wall sections, incorporated into eclectic gallery wall clusters, or placed beside door frames to capture ambient light.

Water-gilded finishes are highly soluble in liquid; frames should be dusted gently with a soft dry camel-hair brush, avoiding wet cloths, chemical polish, or commercial glass cleaners near the gold leaf.
