Circa 1820. Attractive Regency giltwood pier or wall mirror. Surmounted by a moulded cornice with gilded ball decorations above a neoclassical frieze with a lady and putti figures, flanked by columns with acanthus decoration. The rectangular mirror plate (old replacement, in perfect condition) flanked by columns with further foliate and ring decorations all above a neat, moulded base.

A Regency pier mirror is a tall, vertical wall mirror produced in Britain during the early 19th century, designed specifically to hang on the wall space or pier between two windows. These mirrors frequently incorporated classical architectural proportions, ball-trimmed cornices, low-relief decorative friezes, and columned side supports.

Regency giltwood frames were typically constructed from carved pine or lime wood, coated with layers of gesso plaster and clay bole, and finished with thin sheets of genuine gold leaf. The mirror plates were made using hand-blown glass coated with a tin and mercury amalgam backing.
