This early nineteenth century Regency pier mirror is formed from giltwood and gesso with a warm gold finish and a glass mirror plate. The architectural wall piece incorporates vertical reeded pilasters down the sides, a projecting moulded cornice at the top, and a stepped base. The surface displays minor chips to the gilding along the top edge, and the reflective glass plate shows subtle foxing marks across its dark surface. The mirror measures 48 cm high, 38 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. It fits easily onto a narrow wall space in an entrance hall, above a console table in a sitting room, or as a decorative accent in a bedroom.

A pier mirror is a tall, narrow wall mirror originally designed to occupy the vertical wall space between two windows, helping reflect light into room interiors during the 18th and 19th centuries.

During the Regency period, frames were constructed from carved timber frames overlaid with gesso and coated with gold leaf using traditional water or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic pieces feature architectural elements such as reeded pilasters or moulded cornices, timber backboards held with wrought iron fasteners, and original silvered glass with natural oxidisation.

Position the mirror on a narrow accent wall, above a hallway console table, or within an entryway to add historical structure and reflect ambient light.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding liquid cleaners, water, or commercial polishes which dissolve gesso layers.
