Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Segmented timber construction on reverse: frame built up from curved wooden blocks.
Shrinkage gaps in ebonised inner slip: natural drying out of timber over decades.
Gilding worn through to white gesso: extensive age and handling.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This nineteenth-century Regency wall mirror, also known as a butler’s mirror, is a round convex piece measuring 6 cm high, 43 cm wide, and 43 cm deep. The construction incorporates a moulded giltwood frame with a stripped gold finish and a rope twist detail, complemented by an ebonised inner slip and original glass with foxing. The textile background displays stripes in red, white, dark blue, yellow, and brown. Traditional placement for this item is above a mantel in a living room, hallway, or study, reflecting light and widening the perspective of the interior space. The aged glass and textured mouldings coordinate with period or eclectic interiors.

Convex mirrors gained widespread popularity in Britain during the late 18th and early 19th centuries during the Georgian and Regency eras. Often referred to as butler mirrors, they were positioned in dining rooms to allow servants to discreetly monitor the room without turning around.

Traditional convex mirrors were constructed with carved wood frames finished in gold leaf or composition gilding. They typically feature an ebonised wooden inner slip and hand-blown convex glass with silver or mercury backing.

Authentic period examples display natural foxing, grey spotting, or tarnishing on the glass silvering. The backboards often show aged pine panels, hand-cut nails, and original gilding with visible wear to the high points of the carved frame.

Position the mirror above a mantelpiece, console table, or within a hallway to maximize light reflection. The curved lens offers a wide-angle perspective that creates visual depth in compact or narrow architectural spaces.

Dust the gilded frame gently with a dry, soft feather duster or microfiber cloth to avoid lifting fragile gold leaf. Clean the glass sparingly using a cloth slightly dampened with water, avoiding spray cleaners that can seep behind the frame and damage the ebonised slip or backing.
