Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:

This nineteenth-century Regency antique convex wall mirror presents a circular form with rich gold-coloured giltwood and gesso surfaces. The wide moulded frame hosts a perimeter of applied wooden ball embellishments, a carved gadrooned inner border, and a contrasting ebonised and reeded inner slip surrounding a clear convex mirror plate. A metal suspension loop is fixed to the top edge for wall hanging. The piece shows surface wear to the gilt finish and distress to the applied balls, reflecting its age. Practical dimensions measure 30 cm high, 30 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. In a modern interior, this wall mirror suits placement on a narrow wall space in a hallway, above a small console table, or within a living room arrangement where period character and reflective depth are desired. The compact scale allows it to fit comfortably into restricted spaces while retaining the decorative presence typical of Regency wall furnishings.

Convex mirrors gained widespread popularity in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, predominantly during the Regency period. They were designed to bounce ambient light around a room while offering a wide-angle view of the interior space.

These mirrors typically feature a carved timber frame lined with a layer of gesso, which was subsequently gilded using gold leaf. The curved convex glass was fitted inside an ebonised inner slip to accentuate the visual depth of the mirror plate.

Authentic pieces frequently exhibit signs of age such as subtle foxing or mercury degradation on the glass plate, visible gesso beneath worn gold leaf, and traditional wood-backed construction with period hanging fixtures.

A smaller convex mirror functions effectively in narrow spaces such as hallways, alcoves, or integrated into a gallery wall. Its curved surface reflects light across the room, contributing visual interest without overwhelming the wall.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft dry brush to avoid disturbing delicate gold leaf layers. Avoid liquid chemical cleaners on gilded surfaces, and clean the glass plate lightly using a damp microfibre cloth.
