This nineteenth-century Regency wall mirror forms a circular convex glass plate within a gilded and painted cavetto frame, exhibiting a stripped gilt finish and original mirror plate alongside spherical ball mouldings. The construction combines giltwood, glass, and gesso materials displaying gold and cream colours, complemented by visible surface wear, distressing, and aged patina. Measuring 6.5 cm high, 41 cm wide, and 41 cm deep, the compact scale makes it suitable for placement above the mantel in a living space or hallway as a decorative interior accent. Positioned on a wall, the piece reflects natural light while adding historical character and traditional detail to modern domestic interiors.

Convex mirrors gained wide popularity during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, particularly within Georgian and Regency interiors. The curved glass provided a wider field of view, allowing butler staff to observe dining rooms discreetly or homeowners to reflect maximum light across a room.

Traditional examples feature frames carved from timber with applied gesso moulding, finished with gold leaf gilding or paint. The mirror glass itself was crafted as a convex curved plate, often held within a cavetto frame detailed with painted accents or ball ornamentations.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery, natural oxidisation or foxing on the glass plate, and layered gesso underlying worn gilding. The reverse side often features original pine backing boards and iron hanging fittings consistent with 19th-century craft techniques.

Positioning a convex mirror above a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or within an entry hall creates an intriguing focal point. The curved glass captures ambient light and surrounding architectural details, making compact spaces feel broader and more connected.

Dust the frame regularly with a dry, soft-bristled brush to clean intricate mouldings without disturbing fragile leaf gilding. Avoid liquid cleaners on the frame, and clean the glass plate using a slightly damp microfibre cloth without contacting the gilded perimeter.
