Description

A very rare 19th Century giltwood overmantel mirror of exceptional quality and grand proportions. The shaped mirror glass plate is set within an elegantly simple and finely hand carved moulded, pierced and fluted giltwood frame with fabulous alternating rows of lambs tongue, leaf, ribbon twist and beading detail throughout. Surmounted with a beautifully ornate, pierced centred crest composition comprising of an arrangement of a shell, bellhusks and ruffle motif detail flanked with richly scrolling foliate, finely hand carved in high relief. Supported on shaped platform base with ebonised detail with a further gorgeous arrangement of scrolls, foliate and acanthus leaves to each side.

An overmantel mirror is a large architectural wall mirror designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these pieces were crafted to reflect ambient light from candles and hearth fires throughout grand reception rooms.
