Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Margin overmantel mirrors gained prominence during the 18th and 19th centuries, featuring a primary central mirror plate bordered by secondary mirror panels. Designed to sit directly above a fireplace hearth, this configuration maximized light reflection throughout grand reception rooms.

19th-century giltwood frames were typically constructed from carved pine or lime wood coated in layers of gesso plaster. The surface was finished using water or oil gilding techniques with micro-thin leaves of gold, often detailed with moulded composition ornament.

Authentic period pieces display natural age characteristics, including dark oxidation or silvering degradation on original mirror plates, hand-hewn wooden backboards, and fine hairing or craquelure within the gesso foundation beneath the gilding.

Mount the mirror above a contemporary fireplace, console table, or architectural focal point to create visual depth, juxtaposing elaborate historic carving against minimal modern lines and modern colour palettes.

Dust the frame regularly using a dry microfibre cloth or soft hair brush. Avoid water, liquid spray polish, or household chemical cleaners, as moisture can dissolve historic water gilding and soften underlying gesso.
