A nineteenth-century overmantel mirror stands in the Victorian style, constructed from giltwood, glass, and wood with a gold colour and ebonised detailing. The archtop profile features a rounded upper frame, simple linear moulding, a finely hand carved, moulded and fluted frame, and small foot blocks on a platform base. The design vibe brings an English Country House aesthetic. This large overmantel mirror measures 206.5 cm high, 160 cm wide, and 7.5 cm deep. Placement in a home today suits the room placement above the mantel, functioning as a decorative architectural feature in a living room, dining room, or hallway to reflect light and create a sense of space.

An overmantel mirror is designed specifically to sit above a fireplace hearth, reflecting light and enhancing room proportions. The archtop design features a gently curved upper rim combined with a flat base.

Frames from this period typically feature pine or lime wood cores covered in gesso plaster, which was carved or moulded before applying fine gold leaf gilding. Glass panels were then fitted securely within the rear rebate.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-cut backboards, subtle rubbing or wear to the gilt finish revealing reddish bole beneath, and natural age-related distress such as foxing on the glass mirror plate.

Positioned above a fireplace mantelpiece or leaning atop a modern sideboard, an archtop mirror adds structural height, softens angular room architecture, and maximises natural light.

Clean the mirror glass using a dry microfiber cloth, ensuring moisture does not touch the frame boundaries. Dust the gilded timber frame gently with a soft brush, avoiding liquid cleaners that strip historic gold leafing.
