Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a specialized wall mirror designed historically to sit directly above a chimneypiece or fireplace mantle. Popularised in the 18th and 19th centuries, these pieces feature flat lower edges to align with the shelf and arched or crested tops to accentuate ceiling height.

Traditional gilt frames were typically carved from wood such as pine or lime, coated with layers of gesso plaster, and detailed with moulded composition embellishments. Thin sheets of gold leaf were then applied over a clay bole base using water gilding or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic period mirrors generally exhibit signs of hand carving, natural wear to the gold leaf revealing red or yellow clay underneath, and original mercury or silvered mirror glass with subtle tarnish or foxing. The back plates often show hand-sawn timber boards secured with antique nails.

Positioning an ornate gilded mirror above a clean-lined modern fireplace or credenza creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and contemporary minimalist design. The warm tone of the gold leaf adds texture and reflects natural light across neutral colour palettes.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaners that can dissolve historic water gilding. The glass should be cleaned carefully using a damp microfibre cloth, ensuring liquids do not seep behind the frame edges.
