Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian Rococo Revival mirrors from the mid-to-late 19th century feature elaborate asymmetrical scrollwork, naturalistic motifs such as foliage and flowers, and decorative figures like cherubs or putti. They were crafted specifically with flat bases or integrated shelves to sit atop fireplace mantels, drawing heavily on 18th-century French design influences.

These mirrors were constructed using a carved pine or lime wood core overlaid with gesso, a plaster-like composition. Gold leaf was applied over a clay bole layer using traditional water gilding techniques, while the mirror plate was typically made from silvered glass.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age such as slight foxing or dark spots on the mirror silvering, natural wear on high points where the reddish clay bole shows through the gold leaf, and hand-cut timber backing boards on the reverse.

Positioning an ornate gilded mirror above a clean-lined fireplace or modern console table creates a high-contrast focal point. The reflective surface helps bounce natural light across the room while softening minimalist architecture.

Dust the frame regularly using a dry, soft camel-hair brush or feather duster, avoiding any liquid cleaners or damp cloths which can dissolve water-gilded gesso. Clean the mirror glass using a lightly dampened cloth, ensuring moisture does not touch the gilding or slip behind the frame.
