This Regency period overmantel mirror is constructed from carved gilt wood and gesso finished in a rich gold colour. The architectural frame displays framed glass panels, finely carved tapering pilasters with graduated bellflower pendants, floral paterae, and foliate capitals. The upper section features a central oval classical relief medallion depicting a female figure, flanked by opposing winged griffins, urn swags, scrolling acanthus foliage, and anthemion finials, alongside palmette friezes. The overall dimensions measure 190 cm high, 160 cm wide, and 9 cm deep. Suitable for placement above the mantel in a drawing room, dining room, or principal reception area, the piece commands attention as a primary focal point. It coordinates effectively with period furniture, traditional architectural mouldings, and classical interior schemes, reflecting Greco-Roman and Egyptian Revival design influences.

Regency overmantel mirrors are defined by symmetrical architectural proportions, neoclassical iconography, and gilded finishes popular in early nineteenth-century Britain. Common features include pediment crestings, winged figures, urns, and columned pilasters inspired by ancient Greek and Roman design.

These mirrors are typically constructed using a carved timber core coated with layers of gesso plaster. Decorative detailing is carved or moulded before gold leaf is applied via water gilding or oil gilding to the surface.

Authenticity can be determined by examining the backboards, which should show aged timber joinery and period fastenings. The gilded surface often displays natural wear that exposes the reddish clay bole underneath, alongside age-related oxidation in the glass.

Position the mirror directly above a fireplace mantelpiece or a hallway console table to anchor the room and reflect natural light. The strong geometric structure pairs effectively with neutral wall palettes and structured contemporary furnishings.

Dust the gilded frame lightly with a soft, dry brush to prevent lifting delicate gold leaf. Water and solvent-based cleaners must be avoided, as moisture dissolves traditional gesso bases and damages historical gilding.
