Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a wide wall mirror designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. They became prominent architectural features in Western European homes during the 18th and 19th centuries to maximize reflected light from candles and hearths.

Early 19th-century frames were typically constructed from pine or lime wood, shaped with hand tools, and coated with gesso composition. Gold leaf was then applied using water-gilding or oil-gilding techniques over a bole clay base, surrounding a mercury-amalgam or silvered glass plate.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery, visible backboard construction with square-cut iron nails, and natural wear showing red or grey bole beneath the gilding. The glass may show minor desilverization or foxing, and the gesso often displays fine hairline shrinkage cracks called craquelure.

In modern interiors, a giltwood overmantel mirror can be mounted above a minimalist fireplace, positioned over a dining sideboard, or leaned against a neutral focal wall. The metallic finish and structured relief work create visual contrast against smooth modern plasterwork.

Giltwood frames should be dusted gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or abrasive cloths which can dissolve gesso and strip gold leaf. Water-gilded surfaces are particularly vulnerable to moisture and should remain in climate-controlled environments.
