Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Overmantel mirrors were designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece, serving as a focal point in 19th-century reception rooms. Typically framed in carved timber coated in plaster or gesso and finished with gold leaf, these mirrors reflected candlelight and enhanced natural light throughout grand interiors.

Traditional 19th-century gilt mirrors were constructed using a hand-carved pine or lime wood frame coated with a gesso plaster substrate. Intricate details were moulded or carved directly into the structure before water-gilding or oil-gilding with thin sheets of genuine gold leaf was applied over a clay bole base.

Authentic antique gilt mirrors feature subtle wear patterns, red or grey clay bole showing through worn gold leaf, and original hand-sawn wooden backboards. The reflective mirror glass often displays light foxing, slight de-silvering, or seed bubbles characteristic of historical glass manufacturing techniques.

Position the mirror centrally above a chimney breast or atop a contemporary sideboard to create a prominent architectural anchor. Combining ornate 19th-century gilding with modern, clean-lined furnishings produces a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and contemporary styling.

Dust the frame gently using a soft, dry ostrich feather duster or camel-hair brush to avoid disturbing delicate gold leaf. Never use water, liquid glass cleaners, or commercial polishes on giltwood, as moisture dissolves traditional gesso and permanently damages historic gilding.
