The piece measures 150 cm wide at the bottom, 158 cm wide at the top, 127 cm in height, and 5 cm in depth, with a mirror measuring 126 cm wide by 92 cm high. Positioned in a home today, this overmantel mirror is intended for placement above the mantel in a principal reception room or drawing room. It hangs securely against a suitable wall surface to reflect light and expand the visual space of the interior.

FAQs

Victorian overmantel mirrors were designed in the nineteenth century to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. They frequently feature architectural Neoclassical details such as fluted pilasters, moulding, crestings, and gilded finishes designed to enhance natural and candlelight within living rooms.

These frames were typically built with a solid pine or lime wood core, covered with composition moulding (gesso) to form precise decorative motifs. The surface was then finished using gold leaf applied through water gilding or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic period pieces often feature original hand-cut wood backboards, square-headed nails, fine age-related craquelure in the gesso surface, and gentle oxidation or light foxing on the glass plate.

Position the mirror directly above a fireplace mantlepiece to serve as an architectural focal point, or set it atop a dining room sideboard to create visual depth and maximize light reflection in contemporary spaces.

Dust the detailed gesso work carefully using a dry, soft-bristled brush. Avoid using water or chemical cleaners directly on gilded surfaces, as moisture can dissolve the underlying gesso glue layer.
