Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a decorative mirror designed specifically to sit directly on or be mounted above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised in the 18th and 19th centuries, these pieces feature a wide flat lower edge with an arched or carved cresting to enhance room proportions and reflect light.

19th-century giltwood mirrors were typically constructed from a pine frame covered in gesso and composition mouldings. The decorative details were finished with gold leaf using water or oil gilding techniques, fitted with hand-cut mirror glass.

Authentic period pieces exhibit subtle signs of age, such as the reddish clay bole showing through worn gold leaf on raised edges. The backboards are usually rough-sawn pine, and original glass often displays minor oxidisation or soft foxing.

Position the mirror centrally above a chimney breast or place it on a console table to serve as a focal point. The gilded finish offers contrast against dark or neutral modern wall colours, pairing well with contemporary furniture.

Dust the frame gently using a dry, soft bristle brush or feather duster, avoiding wet cloths and chemical polishes which strip gilding. Clean the glass by applying liquid lightly to a soft cloth rather than spraying directly onto the glass edge.
