Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a large mirror specifically proportioned to sit directly above a chimney breast or fireplace mantelpiece. Emerging in popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries, these mirrors feature a flat base to rest flush against the mantel, designed to reflect light and expand the visual space of a room.

19th-century gilt mirrors were typically crafted from wooden foundations coated with composition carved ornament or molded plaster. Gold leaf was then applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques, enclosing mirrored plate glass produced via silvering processes.

Authentic period pieces often show light wear to the gold leaf, exposing underlying reddish clay terra-cotta bole or white plaster ground. The backboards are usually pine or fir planks attached with hand-cut or early machine-made nails, and the glass may exhibit natural mercury silvering oxidation or minor surface distortion.

A gilt overmantel mirror serves as an architectural anchor when positioned above a fireplace mantelpiece or modern console table. Placing it opposite a light source or window maximises ambient illumination and introduces structural contrast within contemporary scheme palettes.

Dust gilded surfaces gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush or feather duster, avoiding water or liquid chemical cleaners that can dissolve historic gold leaf or gesso. Mirror glass should be cleaned by spraying glass cleaner directly onto a microfiber cloth rather than onto the mirror surface to prevent liquid seeping behind the frame.
