19th century English gilt overmantle mirror with its original bevelled glass and wood panelled back. This English gilt overmantle mirror is in very good condition with lovely gilding. The original bevelled glass is also good with some marks and foxing to the glass as can be seen in the images attached.

FAQs

A Victorian overmantel mirror is designed specifically to mount directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Typically produced during the nineteenth century, these mirrors feature architectural proportions, gilded wooden frames, and crestings adorned with classical or floral motifs.

Frames were primarily constructed using carved wood layered with composition ornament (compo) to create detailed relief patterns. Gold leaf was applied over clay bole to achieve a gilded finish, framing silvered glass plates.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of natural age, including minor foxing or oxidisation marks on the glass plate, wear to the gilding showing reddish bole underneath, and traditional joinery on the wooden backboards.

Position the mirror directly above a fireplace or a contemporary console table to serve as a focal point. The reflective surface introduces light into the space while the detailed gilded frame provides visual texture against neutral or dark wall paint.

Dust the frame lightly with a soft, dry microfibre brush or feather duster without applying water or chemical cleaners, which can dissolve water gilding. The glass plate should be cleaned carefully using a damp cloth, avoiding moisture contact with the gilt frame.
