Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a broad wall mirror designed specifically to hang or sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these mirrors served to reflect ambient light across reception rooms while framing the fireplace as an architectural focal point.

Victorian gilt mirrors were typically constructed from pine or lime wood frames, dressed with moulded composition or plaster detail, and finished with gold leaf applied using water-gilding or oil-gilding techniques. The mirrored surface traditionally featured silvered or mercurial plate glass.

Authentic 19th-century pieces often display hand-carved wooden substructures beneath plaster moulding, fine cracking known as craquelure in the gilded surface, and areas where red bole undercoating shows through worn gilding. Original backboards generally consist of hand-sawn timber planks, and glass panes may show minor oxidation.

Position the mirror centrally above a fireplace hearth or atop a hallway console table to enhance ceiling height and light reflection. Pairing a gilded decorative frame with neutral wall paint or rich heritage shades creates a balanced contrast between historic details and contemporary furnishings.

Dust the ornate moulding gently using a soft, dry artist brush or feather duster, avoiding liquid cleaners which can dissolve historic water-gilding. Clean the glass pane by spraying ammonia-free glass cleaner onto a microfibre cloth rather than applying liquids directly to the frame edge.
