Overmantel mirrors emerged in the late seventeenth century and gained widespread popularity during the Georgian and Victorian eras. Designed specifically to sit atop chimneypieces, they served to amplify light from candlelight and fireplaces while acting as the architectural focal point of formal reception rooms.

Nineteenth-century frames were typically constructed with a wooden core, often pine or lime, carved with foundational shapes. Ornate details were created using compo (composition ornament) pressed into moulds, after which coats of gesso and bole were applied prior to water or oil gilding with thin gold leaf.

Authentic giltwood mirrors show signs of age such as natural craquelure in the gesso, gentle wear on high points exposing the red or yellow clay bole beneath, and original timber backboards with square hand-cut nails or aged panel construction.

A large giltwood overmantel mirror can be mounted above a period or contemporary fireplace to anchor a living space. It can also be paired with neutral wall tones or deep paint shades to create structural contrast and enhance ambient natural light.

Antique giltwood should be dusted gently with a dry, soft camel-hair brush or microfibre feather duster. Water or chemical solvents must never be used directly on gold leaf, as moisture dissolves the underlying gesso and removes the gold layer.
