Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Arched overmantel mirrors became prominent in nineteenth-century domestic architecture, crafted specifically to sit directly above fireplace hearths. Their soft curved upper rim complemented high ceilings while maximizing natural daylight and candlelight across living spaces.

These frames were constructed using a soft timber core, such as pine, covered in layers of smooth gesso plaster. Intricate leaf and bead mouldings were formed from gesso before gold leaf gilding was applied over a coloured clay bole substrate.

Authentic period examples generally show timber backings fixed with hand-wrought fasteners, light foxing or mercury distress within the silvered glass plate, and visible traces of red bole clay appearing through worn gilded areas.

Mounting the frame centrally above a modern or period fireplace creates an immediate structural anchor. Alternatively, leaning the piece against a plain painted wall behind a side console introduces scale, light, and architectural contrast.

Frame surfaces must be dusted using only a soft, dry artist brush or microfiber cloth to prevent abrasion to delicate gold leaf. Liquid glass cleaners should never be sprayed near the edges, as moisture can penetrate the gesso and destroy gilded details.
