This large Victorian overmantle mirror is an 1870 English Country House piece made from carved wood, gesso, and glass with a gold leaf finish. The arched upper frame incorporates egg and dart detail, intricate acanthus leaf moulding, and decorative scroll side brackets at the base, presenting an ornate gold colour throughout. The original bevelled mirror plate sits within a substantial frame that measures 128 cm high, 125 cm wide at the bottom, 106 cm wide in the middle, and 5 cm deep. It includes original backboards and is designed for placement directly above a mantel in a living room, dining room, or principal bedroom to add depth and traditional character to an interior.

An overmantel mirror is a decorative wall mirror designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. During the Victorian period, these mirrors were prominently featured in reception rooms to reflect natural light and display classical architectural mouldings.

19th-century gilt frames were traditionally constructed from a carved wooden core covered with layers of plaster composition or gesso. Intricate details were molded onto the surface before applying thin sheets of gold leaf, which were then burnished or toned.

Authentic period pieces often feature timber backboards with square-cut iron nails, natural wear or flaking to the gesso, and subtle grey or red bole showing through rubbed gold leaf. The glass may also exhibit mild silvering degradation or dark spots consistent with age.

A large gilt overmantel mirror creates a focal point when placed above a fireplace, console table, or dining room sideboard. Pairing classical gilded mouldings with contemporary furnishings provides visual contrast and enhances ambient lighting.

Gilt gesso frames should be dusted gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent chipping fragile leafing. Water and liquid chemical cleaners must be avoided, as moisture dissolves water-gilded adhesive substrates and damages original gesso.
