This large French chateau style overmantel mirror dates from around 1900. Built from giltwood and gesso with a gold finish, it includes a bevelled mirror plate, ribbon bow cresting, floral garlands, and acanthus corner spandrels. The frame displays elaborate carved relief floral swags across the top and bottom rails, fluted side pilasters, and distinct architectural stepped corners. Light speckle oxidation appears across the glass plate, alongside small surface knocks, historic touch-ups, and minor surface wear on the gilt surface. Measuring 145 cm in height by 91 cm in width, with a depth of 12 cm, the piece sits securely above a living room fireplace, on a large dining room wall, or above a bedroom console. Position this heavy wall mirror securely into wall studs above a mantelpiece or across from a window to reflect natural light into the space. The structure remains solid with stable joints and no woodworm activity. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth preserves the gilded surface, while glass cleaner applied directly to a cloth rather than the plate maintains the silvered backing.

Gilt overmantel mirrors gained widespread popularity in nineteenth and early twentieth-century interiors as architectural elements designed to sit above fireplace hearths. Crafted to reflect light across grand reception rooms, these mirrors frequently incorporated neoclassical cresting, ribbon swags, and hand-applied leaf gilding.

These mirrors were constructed using a carved timber frame substrate overlaid with molded gesso paste to form ornate relief details. Gold leaf or bronze leaf was applied over a clay bole base, framing a bevelled glass mirror plate.

Authentic period examples demonstrate subtle signs of age, including fine hairline craquelure across the gesso layer, minor silver oxidation on the mirror backing, and hand-cut timber joinery on the reverse. Modern reproductions rely on cast resin mouldings, synthetic spray metallic paint, and perfectly uniform modern glass.

Mount the mirror centrally above a chimney breast mantelpiece or position it over a hallway console table to anchor the space. Combining the ornate gilded silhouette with clean modern lines and neutral wall tones creates a balanced focal point.

Remove dust using a soft dry brush or feather duster, avoiding water or chemical cleaning solvents that can dissolve gesso and water gilding. Apply glass cleaner directly to a soft cloth rather than spraying the mirror plate directly to prevent moisture from pooling along the inner frame edges.
