Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century French overmantel mirrors typically feature gilded softwood or gesso frames adorned with intricate top crestings, such as floral garlands, scrolls, or heraldic motifs. Designed to sit above a fireplace mantelpiece or lean against a wall, they were popularised during the Louis Philippe and Napoleon III eras to reflect light and expand visual room space.

These mirrors were constructed using carved wood frames coated in gessoa smooth plaster mixtureand finished with water or oil gilding using thin gold leaf. The reflective panel consisted of silvered glass, often displaying subtle mercury backing characteristics on early period examples.

Authentic period mirrors exhibit natural ageing, such as minor foxing or dark specks in the silvering, along with wire-cut or hand-hewn backboards. The gilding often shows light wear revealing the red or yellow clay bole beneath the gold leaf, rather than uniform modern spray paint finishes.

A tall gilded leaner mirror creates a focal point when placed atop a fireplace mantel or leaned against a neutral-toned wall in a hallway or living room. Pairing classical gilded moulding with minimalist contemporary furniture provides an elegant architectural contrast.

Clean the glass carefully using a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water, avoiding contact between liquids and the gilded frame. Dust the delicate gesso frame gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush, and avoid applying commercial chemical cleaners or water to gilded surfaces.
