This 19th-century Regency wall mirror is a circular piece finished in gold, composed of giltwood, gesso, and glass. The frame incorporates a convex glass plate encircled by outer gesso moulding, an outer bead rim, a gadrooned outer moulding, and spherule ornamentation. Visible details include slight wear to the gilding on the gadrooned moulding, along with gesso and gilding losses on the ball decoration, all left untouched and unrestored, and an original wood back with wall hanging wire. The object measures 46 cm high, 46 cm wide, and 6 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this mirror suits placement above the mantel in a living room, reception room, or hallway as a wall-mounted decorative accessory.

Originating in the late 18th and early 19th centuries during the Georgian and Regency periods, convex mirrors were designed with outward-curving glass to reflect light into darker corners of a room and allow servants to observe a dining space discreetly.

These mirrors were traditionally constructed using a timber core, often pine, coated with layers of gesso and bole paste before hand-applying thin sheets of gold leaf, while the mirror plate was made from hand-blown convex glass with early silvering techniques.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of age such as slight foxing or oxidisation spots on the original glass, reddish-clay bole showing through worn areas of the water-gilding, and hand-carved joinery or wooden backboards fixed with historic fasteners.

Place the mirror above a fireplace mantelpiece, hall console table, or within a gallery wall to serve as a focal point, reflect ambient light, and add historical contrast to modern decorative schemes.

Dust the frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre feather duster, avoiding water or liquid cleaners that can dissolve original gesso and remove delicate gold leaf.
