Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This large 19th-century Napoleonic Empire wall mirror follows a French Empire style with a rectangular profile. The gold-leaf frame of this French Chateau piece is made of giltwood with pine construction and holds replacement glass. The surface displays rope twist moulding, corner rosettes, and scrolling foliage motifs, alongside decorative sunflowers anchoring the corners and accenting the centre points. The frame measures 122 cm high, 158 cm wide, and 6 cm deep, and the piece includes original panelled backboards with wall brackets. The mirror functions as an overmantel centrepiece when hung horizontally or vertically, and also suits placement above a sideboard in a living room, hallway, or dining space. The versatile design allows for flexible mounting positions within domestic interiors, bringing classical 19th-century French decoration to a wall setting.

FAQs

Napoleonic Empire mirrors, originating in early nineteenth-century France, are characterised by classical symmetry, architectural proportions, and restrained gilded ornamentation influenced by Greco-Roman design.

These mirrors were crafted from solid timber frames coated with layers of gesso and clay bole, onto which thin gold leaf was applied and burnished for a reflective finish.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved wood structures under gilding, natural signs of oxidisation or wear on the gold leaf, classical motifs like rosettes or rope moulding, and original backboards.

Positioning a large mirror above a mantelpiece or sideboard adds architectural scale and reflects natural light, creating a focal point that contrasts with contemporary minimalist decor.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or abrasive cloths that can strip the delicate gold leaf and underlying gesso.
