Superb Large Continental Carved Giltwood Landscape Mirror

19th century
Description

Wonderfull large Continental carved giltwood landscape overmantle or sideboard mirror, mid 19th century and in good condition having aged gracefully.

Important to note, this mirror is decorated with solid carved wood mouldings, there are no plaster mouldings to this frame which is quite remarkable really, and none missing.

The original gilt finish has mellowed well giving just the right amount of wear, certainly a Country House scale and finish.

The mirror glass itself is clear of blemish or foxing too.

This mirror frame is intended to hang “landscape” as shown.

Measurements:

Very decorative and newly upholstered late Regency William IV period three seater size scroll end sofa with carved lions masks and paw feet to the shaped legs. Circa 1830 and in great condition.

Being fully reupholstered, it is now once again and very useable and comfortable sofa, but also a real statement piece in the William Morris quilted finish.

Super quality and in good original condition.

This large nineteenth-century Continental landscape overmantle mirror exhibits a French Neoclassical style executed in gold-finished giltwood and gesso over glass. The rectangular frame displays solid carved wood mouldings without plaster decoration, incorporating corner rosettes, urn carvings, acanthus leaf motifs, and a beaded border along the inner and outer edges. The original gilt finish shows a mellowed appearance with authentic aged wear, and the mirror glass remains clear without blemish or foxing. It measures 110 cm high, 144 cm wide, and 7 cm deep. Designed to hang horizontally, this statement piece suits placement above a mantelpiece or sideboard in a principal reception room or hallway. The substantial Country House scale provides a strong focal point while reflecting light around the interior space.

Continental Neoclassical giltwood mirrors originated in mainland Europe during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, featuring symmetrical carved wooden frames inspired by classical antiquity, embellished with leaf gold applied over a gesso base.

These frames are constructed from carved softwood or hardwood timbers, coated with layers of gesso plaster, and finished with gold leaf using oil or water gilding techniques around a silvered glass mirror plate.

Authentic period gilding typically displays natural wear showing the reddish or grey clay bole beneath, subtle hairline cracking in the underlying gesso, and uneven oxidation or foxing on the glass plate.

A large horizontal mirror is suited to placement directly above a living room fireplace mantelpiece, dining room sideboard, or hallway console table to reflect natural light and enhance spatial depth.

Dust the carved giltwood gently with a dry, soft bristle brush or feather duster, avoiding water or chemical cleaning solvents that dissolve gesso and gold leaf, while cleaning the glass with a damp microfibre cloth.
