This Napoleon III wall mirror dates from the 19th century and exemplifies the French Chateau style. Constructed from giltwood, gesso and glass, the piece presents a gold finish with etched floral motifs and a beaded inner trim. The arched frame incorporates a carved shell and pierced foliage crest at the top, along with visible foxing on the glass plate and wall mounting brackets attached to the sides. The mirror measures 166 cm high, 90 cm wide, and 12 cm deep. Suitable for interior placement in a hallway, living room, or bedroom, the mirror provides a decorative accent when positioned above a mantel. The piece includes its original backboards and retains its original gilding and glass plate, maintaining structural integrity while displaying authentic period character.

Napoleon III mirrors originate from mid-to-late 19th-century France, characterized by eclectic influences blending Neo-Classical and Rococo elements. Common features include arched top profiles, burnished gilding, floral scrollwork, and detailed crestings.

These frames are constructed from pine or lime wood, coated with layers of gesso clay, and finished with gold leaf using traditional water gilding techniques. Mirror plates from this era were originally backed with silver or mercury reflective coatings.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of natural wear where the reddish clay bole shows through worn gold leaf. Glass panels may display light foxing or subtle distortion, and frame joinery often shows age-related expansion lines in the gesso surface.

A large arched mirror is often mounted above a fireplace mantelpiece or positioned above a hallway console table. Placing the piece opposite a window maximizes light reflection and adds visual depth to modern room schemes.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry microfibre brush without applying water or chemical cleaners, which dissolve original gesso. Clean glass surfaces carefully with a lightly damp cloth, avoiding moisture contact with the surrounding frame.
