MotifsQuiver and torch, Acanthus leaf scrollwork, Oval bevelled glass, Laurel wreath cresting

This Victorian wall mirror follows a French Neoclassical style. The piece uses giltwood, gesso and glass materials with a gold finish. The oval bevelled glass sits inside a carved frame featuring a laurel wreath cresting, an Adam style torch, ribbon and bellflower pediment, scroll decoration under the frame with swags, and acanthus leaf scrollwork at the base. Signs of age include a distressed, antiqued appearance on the gold surface and visible wear along the raised mouldings and carved edges. Measuring 117 cm high by 64 cm wide with a depth of 14 cm, the mirror suits display in a living room, hallway or bedroom. It hangs effectively above a mantelpiece, console table or sideboard to add traditional character to an interior.

FAQs

A 19th-century French giltwood mirror is a decorative wall glass encased in a carved wooden frame coated with gesso plaster and finished with gold leaf, frequently exhibiting Neoclassical design influences.

Craftsmen carved the frame structure from timber, applied multiple layers of gesso to smooth the detail, and laid delicate gold leaf sheets over a clay bole base using water or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic period frames feature hand-carved reverse joinery on backboards, natural micro-craquelure in the gesso surface, and reddish clay bole visible through worn areas of gilding.

Positioning an ornate mirror above a fireplace mantelpiece or hallway console table creates a focal point, offering visual contrast when paired with modern, neutral interior finishes.

Dust the frame gently using a dry, soft bristle brush, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or damp cloths that can dissolve gesso layers and strip fragile gold leaf.
