This nineteenth-century wall mirror is executed in the Rococo Revival style from giltwood, glass, and gesso in a gold finish. The rectangular frame displays carved acanthus leaf cresting, foliate scrolls, a plume of ostrich feathers, C-scroll moulding, and a bottom shell cartouche, with a fine split at the top of the frame, a small loss to the inner left edge, and minor marks on the mirror plate. It measures 107.5 cm high, 62 cm wide, and 7 cm deep. The piece is suspended from metal hooks via cords attached to its upper corners. In a contemporary interior, it serves as an ornamental wall-hanging mirror positioned above a mantelpiece in a living room, hallway, or bedroom.

Giltwood mirrors from the 19th century frequently draw inspiration from Rococo and French classical traditions, featuring carved acanthus leaf motifs, C-scrolls, and ornamental crestings designed to add architectural interest and reflect light within grand interiors.

Craftsmen typically hand-carved a timber frame before applying coats of gesso and clay bole. Sheets of thin gold leaf were then applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques, resulting in a burnished surface.

Period pieces feature hand-carved timber backings, subtle surface wear showing the reddish bole clay beneath the gold leaf, and authentic foxing on the glass. Modern reproductions generally utilize cast resin moulding and uniform synthetic metallic paint.

Positioning a gilded mirror above a clean-lined modern sideboard or fireplace mantel creates an engaging contrast between historical ornamentation and contemporary minimalism.

Dust the ornate carved areas softly using a dry feather duster or soft brush. Avoid water, liquid cleaners, or commercial polishes, as moisture can dissolve gesso and remove delicate gold leafing.
