Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

George II style mirrors, originating from the mid-18th century, feature architectural outlines combined with ornate Rococo scrollwork. They frequently incorporate pediments, carved acanthus leaves, motifs such as eagles or ho-ho birds, and contrasting finishes like gilded wood against lacquer or paint.

Traditional construction involved carved pine or lime wood coated with gesso and gold leaf gilding. Frames often incorporated hand-painted lacquer, japanning, or scarlet paint finishes, surrounding mercury-amalgam glass plates.

Authentic period pieces show signs of aged gilding with visible red or grey clay bole beneath worn gold leaf, hand-carved wood backing boards with antique joinery, and natural grey oxidation spots on original glass plates.

Position a scarlet and giltwood mirror above a neutral console table, fireplace mantel, or sideboard to serve as a visual anchor. The bold contrast of gold and red pairs well with dark blue, white, or timber-panelled walls.

Dust giltwood frames gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water or chemical sprays which dissolve gesso and gold leaf. Clean mirror glass by spraying glass cleaner directly onto a cloth rather than the frame.
