FAQs

Giltwood mirrors from the 18th century are characterised by hand-carved wooden frames coated in gesso and finished with thin gold leaf using water gilding techniques. Design movements of this era, such as Rococo, Georgian, and Neoclassical, featured elaborate motifs including acanthus leaves, C-scrolls, shells, and asymmetrical flora.

The structural frames were typically carved from softwoods like pine or lime wood, which were easy to detail. A smooth base of gesso (chalk and glue) and clay bole was applied before gold leaf was laid on top, while the reflective surface was made using mercury-amalgam glass.

Authentic pieces generally show subtle signs of age, such as slight cracking (craquelure) in the gesso, red or grey clay bole showing through worn gold leaf, hand-planed pine backboards, and natural oxidisation or dark spots on the original mirror glass.

A pair of mirrors can be hung symmetrically on either side of a doorway, window, or fireplace to create balance and reflect natural light. They also function well mounted above a long sideboard or console table in a dining room or entrance hall.

Dust giltwood surfaces lightly with a soft, dry feather duster or dry painters brush. Never use liquid cleaners, damp cloths, or chemical solvents, as water and spirit-based liquids will dissolve the water-gilding and damage the gesso beneath.
