A 19th-century French oval wall mirror stands in a grand Regency style, constructed from wood and gesso finished in reflective gold leaf. The substantial frame exhibits a moulded edge with beaded detailing running along the outer profile, complemented by an original mercury plate glass mirror and a panelled back. The complete piece measures 166 cm high, 135 cm wide, and 6 cm deep. Positioned on a wall, this mirror suits placement above a sideboard in a living room, dining room, or hallway, reflecting interior spaces while serving as a functional decorative feature. The gold finish and classic oval proportions integrate into traditional and classic room schemes.

A 19th-century oval giltwood mirror features a continuous curved frame crafted from carved wood and gesso, coated with thin layers of gold leaf to reflect natural light across period reception rooms.

These mirrors were constructed using pine or hardwood timber backings, hand-applied gesso moulding, thin gold leaf gilding, and silvered or mercury glass plates.

Authentic pieces display natural wear to the gold leaf, revealing the reddish clay bole underneath, alongside unevenness or oxidisation in the original mirror glass plate.

Positioning a large oval mirror above a contemporary sideboard or fireplace mantel creates a focal point that breaks up linear wall spaces while maximizing ambient light.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water, chemical solvents, or commercial polishes that can lift delicate gold leaf.
