Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century French giltwood mirrors typically feature oval or rectangular wooden frames coated in gesso and finished with gold leaf. Design elements often incorporate classical motifs such as floral garlands, flaming torches, quivers, ribbons, and beaded borders reflecting Neoclassical and Louis XVI revivals.

These frames were constructed using a carved wood basecommonly pine or limecovered with multiple coats of gesso, a plaster-like mixture of chalk and glue. Clay bole was applied over the gesso to provide a warm foundation before applying thin sheets of genuine gold leaf.

Authentic giltwood demonstrates slight wear where the reddish or greyish clay bole underneath shows through the gold leaf, particularly on high points. True water gilding exhibits seam lines between gold sheets and subtle variations in sheen, unlike uniform modern gold paint.

An ornate giltwood mirror serves as a focal point when hung above a modern fireplace mantelpiece or minimalist console table. Pairing historical decorative frames with clean-lined contemporary furniture creates balanced contrast in dining rooms, living areas, or hallways.

Clean giltwood frames using only a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster to remove dust. Avoid water, liquid detergents, or spray cleaners, as moisture easily dissolves gesso and damages fragile gold leaf coatings.
