This grand nineteenth-century Rococo Revival pier or hall mirror is formed from giltwood, glass, and gesso in a rich gold tone. The large oval mirror glass plate sits inside a hand-carved, moulded, and fluted frame decorated with beaded rows and lamb's tongue motifs. The top features an elaborate pierced cartouche with a scallop shell, C-scrolls, tied ribbon bows, ruffles, and trailing acanthus, foliate, and flowerhead carvings in high relief, while the bottom apron displays centred acanthus leaves, leaves, and berries. It measures 133.3 cm high, 90 cm wide, and 22.8 cm deep. Suitable for hanging on a wall above a mantelpiece in a living room, hallway, or dining room, this decorative piece adds a traditional French chateau accent to an interior.
