Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Pier mirrors were designed to hang on the wall space between two windows, known as a pier, to reflect natural light into a room. During the 19th century, these frames featured gilded wood decorated with Classical, Rococo, or Louis XV inspired motifs such as crests and acanthus leaves.

These frames were carved from softwoods such as pine or lime, coated with gesso, and detailed using composition mouldings. Gold leaf was then applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques over a painted clay bole base.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural signs of age, including subtle red or grey bole showing through rubbed gold leaf and minor shrinkage lines at the frame joints. The reverse side typically features hand-sawn timber backing boards rather than modern engineered wood.

An oval giltwood mirror serves as a focal point when positioned above a fireplace mantelpiece, a hallway console table, or a dining room sideboard. Pairing an elaborate gilded frame with clean contemporary lines creates a balanced contrast.

Dust the frame gently using a soft camel-hair brush or feather duster, avoiding water or liquid chemical cleaners that dissolve gesso and gold leaf. Glass cleaner should be sprayed onto a cloth rather than applied directly to prevent moisture from seeping under the frame edges.
