The frame has an arched shape with a carved shell crest at the top, openwork scrolling details, and a flat base molding. The glass displays light hazing, oxidation, spots, and age-related marks, while the frame shows minor wear, surface marks, old repairs, small areas of loss, and historic refinishing or touch-ups, accompanied by historic treated woodworm on the back. Measuring 147 cm in height, 134 cm in width, and 13 cm in depth overall, with a visible mirror area of 128 cm in height and 124 cm in width, the mirror is structurally sound with no loose joints. It suits spaces requiring a large decorative piece with authentic early 20th-century design and genuine period patina.

FAQs

An overmantel mirror is a wide wall mirror designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Originating in the seventeenth century, these mirrors were constructed to fit the proportion of chimney breasts and enhance natural light reflection throughout a room.

Traditional giltwood frames were constructed from carved timber, covered in layers of gesso plaster, and finished with fine gold leaf applied using oil or water gilding techniques. This process created a reflective metallic surface with distinct subtle tonal variations.

Authentic giltwood mirrors show characteristic signs of age, such as natural wear down to the red or yellow clay bole beneath the gold leaf, shrinkage joinery lines in the timber, and original backing boards made of solid wood planks.

Position the mirror directly above a fireplace surround or mounted over a modern hallway console table. Pairing ornate classical frames with simple modern lines creates architectural interest and maximizes room depth.

Giltwood frames must be dusted gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or clean camel-hair brush. Avoid using liquid cleaners, water, or commercial polishes, as moisture can dissolve the underlying gesso and loosen the delicate gold leaf.
